Doctor Jonathan Arthur Hanover's refusal to comply starts him on an epic journey across the country and into the role of a modern-day prophet. During his mission he is assisted by a collection of characters that includes sailors, drug-runners, truckers, homeless people, and an Iowa wheat farmer. His misadventure is marked by beatings, imprisonments, and constant humiliation.
